The furniture manufacturing industry in Australia has seen significant changes over the past decade or so…
As in many other countries, local manufacturing, especially in commodity products, has been in decline with demand being met by imports from countries with lower costs.
In recognition of this trend, PTS has been able to supply a new and different kind of industry to what has been the tradition. Components processed by PTS generally fall into 2 main areas. Firstly lower cost items with minimal labour requirement that do not have economic value by importing. Examples of these items are bed base products which PTS call Utility Products. Secondly high grade or tight grade specification components that can be supplied quickly and within customer’s requirements in quality and time-frame. PTS call these items Premium Products.
PTS has the capacity to precision dock components to meet very specific customer requirements as far as grade and length criteria
In the usual process of manufacture in plantation softwoods, PTS can utilise the resource to recover these high specification components. Each client has a particular need and through the use of computerised equipment these specifications can be programmed to achieve the right product.
One of the greatest benefits for customers is that they only purchase the product they need. Often the alternative is for our customers to cut their requirements from long length product wasting that part that they cannot utilise. Docking cost and lost product apart from hassle can be avoided.
By far the biggest ranger of utility products manufactured are for the bedding industry.
PTS manufacture bed slats to meet the needs of both bed manufacturers and importers. The slats are precision docked to meet the exact length requirements of each individual customer.
Bed slats are usually manufactured in two sizes. 90×35 and 90×21. All regular customers of PTS have their needs continually monitored through our manufacturing database to ensure a prompt delivery service – even if the customer forgets to order.
Bed slats are supplied either bundled, webbed or just as packs of bulk product. By having consistent usable grade, customers can be confident in purchasing bundled or webbed product knowing what is in the packages is of a standard that will satisfy the end user.
PTS bundle in a variety of bundle sizes usually 5, 6, 10, 11 or 12 pieces so bed producers can include 1 or 2 bundles per bed when supplying to their clients. Webbed bed slat involves fixing 2 material webs/straps/tapes to join the individual boards to space and hold the slats together – this forms a ’roll-out’ base that eliminates the need for spacing each slat on the rail. Other ‘carcass’ or ‘cover grade’ components are produced for the bed base and lounge frame markets. These components meet specific customer requirements in dimension, grade and length tolerance.
Hole boring in components is another service PTS can provide. PTS also stock and supply plywood for use in furniture carcass manufacturing. Please call us for more specific details.
